A £6 million expansion of the successful manufacturing plant of OSI Food Solutions in Scunthorpe has been announced by the American owners. The investment is a major boost for the 21-year-old factory on the town's Skippingdale Industrial Estate and its 180 employees. The nine-acre site currently produces more than 40,000 tonnes of hamburgers and beefburgers for distribution around the UK. Staffing levels, working hours and the number of service deliveries and collections from the site are expected to be maintained at the present level. John Gray, the OSI Group's commercial director for Europe, said that, subject to planning approval, it was hoped to start building the extension next month and have the first stage completed by February 2013. Mr Gray said the £6 million extension would contain new high technology lines and a freezing plant. He said:
"The OSI facility at Scunthorpe is already first-class in terms of food safety, product quality, health and safety standards, environmental performance and employment practices. "The investments planned will ensure that OSI in Scunthorpe also meets the higher standards of competitive performance, which is a great position to be in, given the economic climate. "The extension of the Scunthorpe site footprint is required to install new production lines that maintain the cost competitiveness of the plant and improve on environmental performance. "The site has been operating for almost 22 years and, despite ongoing investment, it has reached a point where in order to continue meeting customer demand in a competitive market, some technological developments are required."
Planners at North Lincolnshire Council have been told the proposed extension will be linked to the existing Scunthorpe factory. It is not yet know when planners will rule on OSI's application. Heat recovery equipment, condensers, pump sets and a compressor will offer efficiencies and cost-savings.
