'Catlin Group' confirmed as Arctic Survey Title Sponsor

Jenrick CPI is delighted to announce that the Arctic Survey has secured a main/title sponsor namely, Catlin Group Limited - the project is now titled the Catlin Arctic Survey.

Jenrick CPI is a committed sponsor and has been working with the Catlin Arctic Survey team since early summer when the team set themselves a deadline of August to reach the required level of funding for the survey to go ahead.

With Catlin Group joining us on the sponsor list, as title sponsor, this means one of the most important scientific studies of our generation is officially ready for launch – The Catlin Arctic Survey will take place from February 2009.

On announcing the sponsorship, Stephen Catlin, Chief Executive of Catlin Group stated:

“As a speciality insurance/reinsurance company, the potential effects of global warming will have a direct impact on our business. However, there are gaps in our knowledge and much of the evidence regarding the pace of global warming is not scientifically proven.  Catlin is a company that manages risk based on hard facts, so we believe that obtaining this information is vital. The Catlin Arctic Survey will help inform all those who must plan for the potential effects of global warming.”

In addition to the Catlin Group, the Catlin Arctic Survey gained recent recognition and comment from other areas, including the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The Executive Director of UNEP, Mr Achim Steiner stated:

“For the international community to secure, through the Arctic Survey’s efforts, the actual measurements of the thickness of the North Pole sea ice cover will greatly assist the complex task that our scientists and policy-makers face in determining the precise impacts of global warming on the planets support systems."

Mr Steiner also emphasised the need for the global community to scale up it’s response to climate change and said that UNEP would work closely with the Catlin Arctic Survey to help raise public awareness.

The World Wildlife Fund is a global partner of the Catlin Arctic Survey and will be presenting the official scientific findings report from the survey to the UN Climate Change Conference of Parties in November 2009 at COP15 in Copenhagen.

Other recent comments include, Professor Wieslaw Maslowski, one of the world’s leading scientists in the study of Arctic sea ice based at the US Navy’s Department of Oceanography in Monterey, California, and a lead scientific partner of the Catlin Arctic Survey, commented:

“We’ll be integrating the survey’s actual observations with same-day weather data to obtain near real time model estimates of sea ice conditions on a daily basis.  In this way we can test the accuracy of our modelling of the ice’s thickness and re-assess our projections as to how long the surviving thicker ice is likely to last as a perennial feature."

Jenrick CPI is continuing to sponsor and assist in a number of ways (including the introduction of a major satellite communications company to assist with comms from the ice) to ensure that the Catlin Arctic Survey not only take place, but is a major success.

“For the sake of our children and grand-children, I pray that we will heed the findings of the arctic Survey and can only commend this remarkably important project to you.” - HRH The Prince of Wales
